This is an extraordinary yarn painting that measures 12" x 12" that Maximino Renteria did.
Maximino started his artistic career under the great Jose Benitez Sanchez. Eventually, after working under him for 4 years, Maximino decided to start doing his own work with his wife. Maximino got married in 1993 to Yolanda. The couple started to develop their own style, which is heavily influenced by the classic style of his teacher. The themes which are depicted in his yarn paintings all stem from conversations he had with his father, a marakame (shaman) of the community, regarding the Wixarika mythology.
Yarn paintings are one of the most recognizable artistic traditions of the Wixárika (Huichol) people of western Mexico. Created by pressing brightly colored yarn into beeswax-covered wooden boards, these intricate works depict sacred symbols, animals, deities, and visions inspired by spirituality and ceremonies. Each piece tells a story connected to nature, ancestral knowledge, and the Wixárika worldview, preserving cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations.
