Welcome to Peyote People. We are based in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where we have run a Native Folk Art Gallery since 1997 that works directly with the artists and their families.
Alebrijes are made out of a special wood called copal. This wood has large quantities of water, thus it is very malleable and easy to carve. Due to the large quantities of water and all the coats of paint, the average time to make a wood carving is 8 to 10 months. The Alebrijes mainly come from two towns in Oaxaca called San Martin Tilcajete and Santiago Arrazola. The people from these towns hand carve and paint the Alebrijes.
