Jacobo y Maria Angeles are artisans proudly from Oaxaca, creators of Zapotec figures carved in wood called Tonas and nahuales known worldwide as “alebrijes”. they use the Mixtec-Zapotec iconography in all pieces creating a unique style.
It’s remarkable that the many colors used on their wood carvings evolve from natural pigments, often from unexpected sources such as pomegranate seeds, lime juice and sodium bicarbonate, among others. Skillfully combined, these elements become that both applies with painstaking detail to the wood carvings created. Together, their individual talents created a series unique, unified artistic statements.
