Artist Spotlight: Julia Fuentes

Julia and J. Juan from San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca were just at Colectika demonstrating their incredible talents.  For anyone who missed their visit to Puerto Vallarta they were amazing, his demonstration wood carving was exceptional and her paintings are so much more refined than the traditional primitive paintings and are adding a new level of depth to Mexican Folk Art.

There are a number of artists, including Julia's brother Zenny, who are more famous but we really believe that these two artists will become the next biggest stars in Mexican Folk Art.

Julia and Jose Juan have a unique way of stylizing their artwork. Their philosophy greatly differs from the other painters in the village, for their wood carvings are a blend of detail and simplicity. Having been born into a family of artists, Julia would often comment on how much detail her siblings would add to the artwork. Thus, she began to juxtapose the complex patterns with simple ones, in order to keep the carving from feeling too busy.
